英文學習的雙峰現象
The learning of the English language remains the most uneven educational
development in Taiwan, with the best and worst students accounting for the
two biggest groups in terms of scores.  A normal development would have
the students’ achievements graphically represented in the shape of a mountain,
with most of the students in the middle forming a peak.  But for the subject of
English, the representation has been typically the shape of a valley, with a
peak on each end of the achievement distribution chart, representing the best
and worst students respectively.  If English teaching methods remain unchanged
in school after the 12-year compulsory education starts two years from now,
the “twin-peak” development will spread to senior high school years.  Under
the current compulsory education system, students are grouped without
considering their abilities.  But English classes on the senior high level must be
grouped according to competence.  The huge gap between underachievers and
ace students results from the latter group’s early start in learning the
           language.
